2025 Winter Outerwear Guide: Best Coats & Jackets for Every Occasion

2025 Winter Outerwear Guide: Best Coats & Jackets for Every Occasion

Cold weather is finally here, and with so many great sales happening now, this seems like a good time to update my Winter Outerwear Guide. As I’ve been intentionally working to build a more complete and workable wardrobe, I’ve learned that having a variety of outerwear options is essential. The right coat not only serves a practical purpose, but it can also make or break an outfit. With that in mind, I’ve rounded up five coats you may want to consider adding to your wardrobe, and how and when to wear them.

Good coats can be a bit an investment, but if you choose wisely and take good care of them, they can last many years. Whether you’re starting your collection or looking to fill in the gaps, I hope this post is helpful!

5 Essential Coats For a Complete Outerwear Wardrobe

For size reference, I’m 5’5″ and I tend to run in between sizes with coats. I usually wear a small or medium, or size 6 or 8, depending on how the sizing runs. Also, a lot of the coats and other wardrobe items linked below are on sale right now, so be sure to click through on any that interest you.

Classic Wool Coat: Timeless Elegance for Every Occasion

J.Crew Daphne Topcoat (6) // ivory sweater (option) (S) // MOTHER denim (29) (more sizes – 20% off with LETSCYBER) // LØCI sneakers (8)

A wool coat is timeless and polished—ideal for dressy occasions or professional settings—but it’s also a great way to elevate casual looks like jeans or even joggers and sneakers (a combination I love).

J.Crew Daphne Topcoat (6) // black sweater (S) – 40% off // PAIGE denim (29) // suede booties (8) // ivory sweater (option) (S) // MOTHER denim (29) (more sizes – 20% off with LETSCYBER) // LØCI sneakers (8) // similar cocoon style coat (6) // Burberry scarf (option)

Classic colors such as camel, black, navy, gray, and winter white are always chic, but a bold red or green can add personality, and patterns like plaid or houndstooth offer a stylish twist. My J.Crew Daphne Topcoat in the camel is one of my current favorites; it looks as great with jeans as it does with business-casual looks. And I still love my grey J.Crew cocoon coat, but it’s a few years old. It was recently replaced with the J.Crew Toscana Coat. For a budget-friendly option, I like the Gap Factory Topcoat, shown below.

I’m never without a black wool coat, and I love the black Andrew Marc Regine Pressed Bouclé Wool Coat because it works with both dressy and casual looks, and it’s surprisingly warm. You can see how I wore it above with a holiday look for dinner with my husband, and at the top of this post with jeans and sneakers for touring Chicago last winter.

Some other good options include the Ralph Lauren Wool Blend Reefer (love that plaid!), the J.Crew Savoy Topcoat, and for a belted version, the Mango Woolen Coat with Belt.

Puffer Coat: Warmth and Style for Cold-Weather Casual Looks

Bernardo Bundle Up Hooded Puffer Jacket (M) // old Sanctuary sweater // PAIGE denim (29) // Blondo boots (8)

Puffer coats are lightweight yet incredibly warm, and they’re available in both long and short styles. This style of coat is better suited to casual looks, but some are more versatile than others.

The Bernardo Bundle Up Hooded Puffer Jacket I’m wearing above is a good option for a mid-length, mid-weight puffer jacket that can be easily dressed up or down, and it’s a great price point. I wish they hadn’t discontinued this pretty pewter color, but it’s still available in black.

Athleta Aire Puffer (S) // Momentum Seamless Tee (M) // Rainier High Rise Leggings (M) // Brooks Ghost (9)

For a sportier look, I really like my Athleta Aire Puffer for topping off an athleisure outfit. It’s super lightweight, and it packs down into itself for easy carrying, storage, and travel. They also have this longer version that crosses into parka territory (see more below.)

similar vegan leather puffer (S) // black sweater (S) – 40% off // MOTHER denim (29) – 30% off // similar boots (8)

When I want an edgier vibe, my Abercrombie vegan leather puffer is a favorite for winter date nights or when I want to level up a casual outfit.

For other puffer options, Aritzia puffers are all the rage these days; I’m dying to try The Super Puff and The Super Puff Long. Save The Duck also has some good stylish options, like the Isla, the Elivra (on sale), and the longer Bethany. And I love this FP Movement Pippa Packable Puffer Jacket for more trend-driven look. For a more budget-friendly price point, Gap Factory has this ColdControl Max Midi Puffer Coat and the shorter ColdControl Puffer Jacket.

Parka: Ultimate Protection for Extreme Winter Weather

similar The North Face parka (M) (longer option) // similar turtleneck (M) // MOTHER denim (29) (more sizes – 20% off with LETSCYBER) // UGG boots (8.5)

The terms “parka” and “puffer coat” are often used interchangeably, but they’re actually two different types of coats. A parka typically refers to a longer, insulated jacket designed for very cold temperatures and harsh climates—making it a must-have for those of us who live in areas with “real winter.” Most parkas include an insulated hood, often trimmed with real or faux fur, for added warmth and protection.

This is the coat I wear on the coldest of days, or when I’m going to be outside for an extended period of time. I swear by my The North Face Metropolis Parka, which has been replaced this year by the Hydrenalite 600 Fill Power Down Parka. There’s also a longer version available, and this more traditional Arctic Waterproof 600-Fill-Power Down Parka with Faux Fur Trim.

A few other options to consider are the highly rated Fjallraven Nuuk Parka, the classic the Lands’ End Expedition Down Waterproof Winter Parka, and the stylish lululemon Snow Warrior Parka. For a more budget-friendly price point, check out this Sam Edelman Faux Fur Trim Parka and the Ralph Lauren Pillow Hood Longline Down & Feather Jacket. And if you really want to splurge, there’s always Canada Goose.

Quilted Jacket: Versatile Layering for Mild Winters

Barbour Clydebank Quilted Jacket (option) (6) // rust pullover (S) // MOTHER denim (29) (more sizes – 20% off with LETSCYBER) // Adidas sneakers (8) AWAY Carry-On & Everywhere Bag

A quilted jacket bridges the gap between lightweight layers and heavier coats. It offers moderate warmth without the bulk, making it perfect for transitional weather or layering on chillier days. This is probably my most worn style of coat during fall and winter because it’s so versatile, and our winter weather here in Philly is often rather mild.

While typically shorter than parkas or puffers, quilted jackets often come in tailored silhouettes that lend a polished touch to casual and semi-casual outfits.

I’ve had this Burberry Short Finsbridge Quilted Coat for almost 10 years now, and it’s one I come back to time and time again. Burberry never goes on sale, so I stalked it until Bloomingdale’s was doing their best Power Points offer, and then I splurged, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve gotten so much wear out of it over the years, and it still looks like new.

It sold out years ago, so I usually link to the Barbour Beadnell Quilted Jacket as a similar option. It’s a big longer, but it has plaid lining, and it’s a classic quilted style that will stand the test of time. I also really like the Barbour Clydebank Quilted Jacket that I picked up at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in the summer. (The Ombersley Quilted Corduroy-Collar Jacket at Macy’s is similar.) For a trendier look, check out the Faherty Horizon Series Quilted Jacket and this Thread & Supply Onion Quilted Jacket.

A Statement Coat: Bold Outerwear to Elevate Any Look

AllSaints Orten Leather Bomber (8) (option) (option) // FRAME Le Slim Palazzo (29) (similar for less) // Sam Edelman boots (8)

Finally, a statement coat is where fashion meets function. Once you have the practical essentials covered, it’s fun to add a few bolder, stylish options to the mix—like an edgy leather bomber or a glamorous faux fur. This type of coat instantly elevates an outfit and is a great way to inject your personal style into your outerwear wardrobe.

My personal favorite type of statement coat is a leather moto or bomber jacket, like in the outfit above. I like how it adds an edgy vibe to my classic, luxe looks. But I also make sure to have some type of faux fur jacket on hand for holiday events and for leveling up date night looks.

Sanctuary Luxe Faux Fur Jacket (S) // black sweater (S) – 40% off // PAIGE denim (29) // Blondo boots (8) BlankNYC faux fur jacket (M) // sequin top (S) // AG Jeans (29) // patent flats

This Sanctuary faux fur jacket is on sale at Bloomingdale’s; I got mine last year, and I’ve worn it quite a bit. I like how the zip-up front looks a little more casual than some. I also have this BlankNYC faux fur with the shawl collar that I like for dressier looks. I wore this last year with a velvet dress to my husband’s holiday cocktail party.

And then there are shearling coats, aka sherpa or teddy coats, which strike the perfect balance between cozy and chic. These are great for adding texture and warmth to casual or semi-dressy winter looks.

similar sherpa coat // ivory sweater (option) (S) // MOTHER denim (29) – 30% off // Gap Factory Sherpa Coat (S) // flare jeans // Blondo boots // HOBO bag

I splurged on this Vince Faux Shearling Coat last winter when it went on sale, and I love how it adds a touch of drama to my everyday looks, and it’s soooo warm. (The Aritzia Babaton Teddy Coat is similar.) Gap Factory also has this cozy brown sherpa coat for an amazing price, and there’s also this Amazon option.

I hope this post is helpful, if you’re building a winter coat wardrobe. Here in the Philadelphia suburbs, we get all the seasons, and they have a way of overlapping, so we definitely need a variety of outerwear. Your list of must-have coats may be different, depending on where you live, but hopefully this gives you a starting point.
